Factors for Career Advising

I recently took a class in western career counselling. We had an assignment to give our concept and support it with the course texts in only two pages. I wrote that my concepts were quite different than the books, but I correlated my root concepts according to Judith Grutter's model (Who, Why, What, Where), and then added in 'When'. I then put all my astrological interpretations in the terminology of the modern psychological career counselling, which makes it much more accessible.

I could talk about each point in more depth, but this is just an outline meant to fit on two pages- minimal and to the point.

Note: It is crucial to know the nature of the personality and the purpose/focus of the individual before we begin to evaluate the field of career. Grutter mentions that people often want to know the What and Where of career before being clear about the Who and Why. Her classification is therefore a perfect format to look at significations of career within.

I. Who am I: the nature of the person who will be holding the job:
-Kārakas- the embedded individual viewpoints impacting the structures of career:
Sun: recognition and respect. The less strong the Sun, the more career becomes a place one cries for recognition. The stronger the Sun, the more content one is with their recognition. The Sun has a strong role in integrity, and it gives leadership within the workplace. A weak sun will often give ego aggrandizement.
Mercury: ingenuity, excitement and creativity in the workplace. Mercury is the puer energy of the Jungian; it is creative, childlike and looks to find work that fulfils one's inner meaning so that work is enjoyable. Excessive rajas of Mercury can make one have too many ideas without the ability to accomplish anything. (Mercury also signifies finances/money in general but more particular analysis is required for this.)
Saturn: labor, organization, structure, discipline and how traditional one is. One’s focus on making a living, paying the bills, and focus on security. Too much Saturn gets people stuck at dead end jobs or jobs they don't like for the benefit of security and thereby work becomes burdensome. Ability to work hard or not.
-Ascendant: It is the operating individual personality. Planets in lagna impact the persona; take into account the natural and house significations of planets placed there and lagneśa because that is 'who' will be in the role of the other career indications.
-Ascendant lord and its placement: nature of personality (planet), life/mental focus (placement), and ethical nature (guṇa of planet, conjunctions and strength), ability to focus and achieve goals (strength)
-Pañchāṅga kāraṇa lord strength and placement: career tattva or how does career fit into the individual’s life relative the other elements of marriage, friends, health, and hobbies.
-Argalā given by planets in the tenth house: how various elements of career influences life
-Argalā given by planets to the tenth house: how various elements of life influences career
-Challenged planets (debilitation and curses): Past failures (or success) that impacts the choices being made
-Planets conjoined the kāraṇa lord and the Amātyakāraka: how we are guided for work
-Navāṁśa trines: skills and abilities (and likes) the person has to be successful with
-Navāṁśa: the areas of work that affect you and your interaction with them (bhāva)
-Navāṁśa tenth house: fortune or luck (bhāgya) with ease of financial flow in life, modified by combinations for wealth or poverty (dhana and daridra yogas)
-Wealth and poverty combinations, Horā lagna, and other financial factors influence personality as well as ‘Where’ and individual works.

II. Why is work important to the person:
-Strength, placement and conjunctions to the Moon: mental/emotional nature and social interaction
-Planets in the tenth house: situations that influence profession; Moon likes a social environment to work, un likes an environment with respect, Mars likes an environment with dynamism and competition or problems to solve, etc.
-Strength of the tenth lord in Rāśi and Navāṁśa: beneficence of career area (Mercury is primary kāraka of tenth lord- so how one is able to apply their skills and thinking about career).
-Placement of the tenth lord from lagna: approach to work, experience of career, ideals of honour and dignity, area of life that gains success.
-Placement of the tenth lord from the tenth house: qualities of career, how one feels towards their career
-Relationship of ātmakāraka (AK) and darakāraka (DK) at the soul level and Ārūḍha Lagna (AL) and darapada (A7) at the material level: personal relationship with money and earning

III. What do they most like to do:
-Tenth from Moon: work preferences and social success with work based on family background and parental opinions (which takes you to the job). See planets in the tenth house from Moon and if none then look at the lord and its yogas.
-Eleventh from Ārūḍha Lagna (AL11) : what type of product/people/industry makes the person money; utilizing planetary placement with graha and rāśi aspect
-Strength of the fourth lord from Sun shows level of resources
-Darapada: what type of clients come to the individual and how business is seen by others
-Ārūḍha Lagna: what the person becomes known for (fame) and will be successful as; image, reputation, perception by others
-A10 (karmapada) what aspect of our work is recognized by others; acknowledgement. Beneficial or negative conjunctions based upon significations of tenth house kārakas
-Rāśi and navāṁśa ninth lord and dharma devatā compared to overall chart to understand a deeper purpose of life
-Comparison of ninth lord/purpose with tenth house and lord to differentiate or aggregate purpose (dharma) and financial earning (artha); vocation (ones calling) and making a living
-Mahāpuruṣa yogas and other mitigating factors: alter the character and inner urges to pursue a particular area (combinations always modify other significations)

IV. Where would they most enjoy doing it:
-Planets in the rāśi eleventh house show associates/work friends which directly relates to earning potential; for the majority of people, it’s not about what you know, but who you know that creates opportunities for earning.
-Argala/virodha of the fourth and tenth house on lagna: focus between home and work
-Argalā/virodha of the third and eleventh house on lagna: approach to making money
-Third and sixth house from lagna and Ārūḍha Lagna: level of aggressiveness or passiveness
-Daśāṁśa kārakas: detailed strengths and weaknesses in career
-Daśāṁśa lagna and lagna lord: ideals and strength related to career
-Daśāṁśa sixth and seventh houses: differentiating between self-employed or service work, private or public sector (modified by sixth, seventh, ninth, and lagna lord placement)
-Daśāṁśa tenth house and houses from there: specifics on career

V. When we do the various phases of our career path unfold:
-Viṁśottari daśā (navatārā) & transits in the rāśi/navāṁśa: activation of factors
-Daśāṁśa Narayana daśā: broad timing of career changes, shifts in field of career
-Daśāṁśa Narayana antardaśā: change of focus within the career situation

[Narayana daśā of the karmapada or a signs aspecting it will indicate a time period to be recognized for ones work according to Pandit Sanjay Rath.]

Note:
-A variation of this list was presented in my A10: Karmapada lecture and article, but this is reorganized and the significations are given deeper interpretation here.
-I generally run everything by my guru before posting, but these delineations have not been approved at present.
