The Vāra Chakra is a list of the planets in order of the days of the week with the addition of Rāhu and Ketu. The sixth planet in order of the days from any planet is the planet that is said to destroy it. This is interpreted from the Jaimini Sūtras 2.1.50: brahmāṇi śanau pātayorvā tataḥ.

For example, in an inclusive count from the Sun, Venus is the sixth planet in the vāra chakra. These two planets in combination can destroy a house. The sixth planet will always be destroying the other planet. Here is a list of the dvi-yogas with their sixth vāra planet.

Sun Venus: Rāja yogas are ignited by the Sun and destroyed by Venus. Venus directs the energy and vitality to be wasted on pleasures and the necessary work does not get done. The power of rāja yoga goes to acquisition of personal pleasure. This is symbolic of a king who spends all his money on dancing girls. One can also notice that it is Venus that causes debilitation to the Sun. Bṛhat Jātaka says the person will make money from being on stage or by weapons.

Moon Saturn: Sādhu yoga, the person will be (or feel) like an outcaste, an outsider. There will be feelings of loneliness and an inability to make deeper emotional connections. The perception can become pessimistic. Bṛhat Jātaka says that Moon with Saturn makes a person the son of a second marriage.

Mars Rāhu: Vijaya yoga, the person will fight terrible battles. The native is attacked by people with malefic intent, which causes the person to fight. Rāhu causes agni stambhana, he stops the agni. The light and heat of Mars is not allowed to burn freely and healthy.

Mercury Ketu: This combination causes breakage of bones. Mercury is the pṛthvi tattva and is made weak and unstable by Ketu. The intellect must be practical, and Ketu does not support this.

Jupiter Sun: That which brings the fall of Jupiter is the ego. One would think the Sun would support Jupiter but as it is sixth from it in the vāra chakra it is in enmity to combining in a house with Jupiter. Notice this may not be as bad as a combination that is also a combination of inimical planets. Bṛhat Jātaka says that he’ll be cruel and always doing other’s work.

Venus Moon: “Motherhood brings the end of dancing-girlhood”. Enjoyment and fun are lessened by responsibility. Venus Moon conjunction is also a type of Rudra Yoga, which causes accidents. Bṛhat Jātaka says Moon with Venus makes a man skilful in weaving.

Saturn Mars: Saturn is destroyed by Mars as the old is overtaken by the young. Industrialization/modernization takes over the old traditional ways. Notice that Saturn (Capricorn) exalts Mars, but Mars (Aries) debilitates Saturn. Bṛhat Jātaka says that Mars with Saturn makes the man sorrowful, untruthful, disgraced or blamed.

Rahu Mercury:  The buddhi (the deciding factor of the mind) is polluted. The scheming of Rahu is given the planning of Mercury. The discrimination is lost and the person can be led into the muddiest parts of Māyā.

Ketu Jupiter: Jupiter is putrakāraka (significator of children), he can destroy the ability to take the monastic path. This combination will generally delay children. Ketu is the monk and Jupiter is the planet reminding you of your dharma to the world.

These combinations will cause destruction no matter where they are. They destroy the house they are placed in. If you miss these combinations you will be missing a major area of problems.

Example Chart 1:

The ascendant is Pisces with Sun and Venus in the fifth house. Venus destroys the Sun. In Mercury Venus Vimśottari daśā, the native left his job of government service. Venus is putrakāraka and lord of the upapada, so it was his father who offered a business proposal and the wife that pushed him to leave his government service. The fifth house will be hurt: children, libraries, and students. The native has had some difficulties in these areas. Venus will destroy the Sun. This can be good sometimes, as for example a malefic Sun in the charts of those with a Capricorn or Aquarius lagna.

There are specific methods for working with these combinations.

There are multiple numerological systems for different purposes. This is the one to be used for this type of remedial measure.  Whenever there are planetary problems like this add the planets in the dvi-graha yoga. Then add to make the number a multiple of nine. The number added to make it a multiple of nine would be the planet that will give the solution.

Sun (1) + Venus (6) = 7 + 2 = 9

2 = Moon

or

Mars (9) + Saturn (8) = 17 + 1 = 18

1 = Sun

In this way the planet that gives the upāya is calculated. The native should worship a deity associated with this number.

The mantra will be indicated by the placement of this planet.

For Example 1, the native had a Sun Venus yoga. The planet that gives the upāya (as seen above) is the Moon. The Moon is placed in the 12th house. So a Dvadākṣari Moon mantra, Aum Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya, was used to alleviate the native’s problems.

A table has been compiled below to make this calculation fast and easy.

 Native has a Gemini lagna with Mars Rahu and Venus in the 5th house. The 5th house and its lord are afflicted. Mars (9) + Rahu (4) = 13 + 5 +18, the upāya number 5 is Mercury.

Mercury is well placed in the 4th house, so the akṣaras should be designed for the upāya planet. Either a 4 akśara or Śoḍaśākshara mantra for Mercury should cure the afflictions to the fifth house.

The native was given the 16 akṣara Buddha mantra Aum Aim Hreem Shreem Kleem Saraswatyai Buddhajananyai Svaha.

When Upāya is not possible

The kāraka of the house is extremely important. Kāraka is like the king of the area, and it has the power to restore peace to that area of life.

The upāya graha or the kāraka give the way out of problems with a house. If the upāya lord is not well placed, it cannot give the cure.

If both the karaka and the remedial planet are ill placed, it shows fixed (dṛdha) karma that cannot be changed.

There was a man who had Mars Saturn in his fifth house. Jupiter (fifth house kāraka and putrakāraka) was in the third house with Rāhu; mārakasthāna and guruchandala yoga. The upāya planet was Sun (12th lord), which was badly placed in the 7th in Aquarius. The diagnosis was that there was no cure for the problem as the house was destroyed, the kāraka destroyed and the upāya planet was malefic to lagna and badly placed. The native was told he would not have children and there would be no solution to his problem. The main point is not give people false hope if there is no remedy.

Example Chart 3: No remedy

Chart 3 has Mars and Rāhu conjunct in the third house. As this combination destroys the significations of the house, one would interpret that the native’s siblings have problems, the third house rules younger siblings. The native’s sister is mentally disturbed, to the point that she lives in a state institution. She is unable to care for herself and she is dangerous to others.

The kāraka of the third house is Mars; it is unable to help, as it is part of the problem. The upāya planet for this combination is Mercury. Mercury is with its sixth vāra planet and so will not help. The problem with her sister does not have a remedy, it is dṛdha karma, and cannot be changed.

Conclusion

The negative dvi-graha yogas often overlooked are explained and whether it can be remedied or not is understood. In this way one can find problems quickly by looking to the house and kārakas when an issue arises. One now knows to look for the root of the problem and not just the daśā, which is activating the problem. A deeper understanding of deities and mantra śāstra will improve the potency of ones ability to remedy the negative dvi-yoga combinations.
