To the lagna even death can be indicated, there is a similar dictum, using a different rule given by Jaimini. In Ayur dasas if malefics are in 2nd and 12th, or 5th and 9th, or 8th and 12th, then that dasa can inflict death in the calculated stage of life. Notice also that the rule of 8 and 12 is not using the Argala concept.
Bandhana defined by MW
Sanskrit Digital Dictionary: binding, tying, fettering. holding fast, stopping.
the act of binding, tying, fastening, fettering. binding on or round. catching,
capturing, confining, detention, custody, imprisonment or a prison,
suppressing. mundane bondage.
There are four tamasic
planets: Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu. It is these tamasic planets that cause bandhana. The place that these malefics can most cause bandhana is in the 2nd,
12th, 5th, and 9th houses. If this combination
is from Lagna then it is a physical bandhana, if it is from Moon then it is a mental
bandhana. Any planet conjunct malefics in these houses will suffer from bandhana
according to the nature of the planets. There are four tamasic planets. These
four malefics cause the 4 types of bandha.

Ari Bandha is caused by Saturn, the karaka for our own shadripu
(sins/weaknesses) and enemies. Saturn causes bandhana from enemies, diseases or
own weaknesses (Shadripu). This can be due to curses from the past or the present
birth. The person will have tremendous sorrow, suffering and depression. They
are overpowered either by enemies or disease or some other weakness. The
Shadripu (six weakenss/sins) can be linked with the grahas. The graha
associated with the bandhana can show what the problem manifests as. The sixth
lord can also represent shadripu, mostly that which is brought out by bad
company. Sixth lord, representing enemy and shadripu, is a maraka to the 5th.
The 5th gives ashraya (shelter), and the 6th house
destroys that. If the 6th house is connected to the 5th
lord it can destroy your mantras, prayers and rituals.
Vir Bandha is caused by Mars, the karaka of war, fighting,
soldiers, etc. Mars will cause anger from people it is associated with, anger
which will come deserved or undeserved from the situation. Planets associated
with Mars can show who the anger comes from or what the anger may be about. It
will give problems from the police, soldiers, or other militant type of people.
The person will be arrested or troubled by law enforcement personal for reasons
which most people have no trouble. The person may be beaten or physically
attacked or arrested. Vir itself means bravery, the person is tied down or put
in a situation in which they have no chance to have bravery.
Naga Bandha is caused by Rahu and is considered the worst. The
person is cheated, falsely accused, people try to dirty the persons name. They
may fall into terrible times and get into criminal activity and have bad
company. As Rahu is a shadow planet it gives problems with things that cannot
be easily seen. Problems by spirits/ghosts, witchcraft, black magic/dark tantra
are also forms of Naga Bandha. Signs and planets associating with Rahu show the
bondage.

Ahi Bandha is caused by Ketu and shows unimaginable events,
mental aberrations, and humiliation. There are sudden results like reversals,
decline in health for no apparent reason, insomnia, mental disorders etc. As
Ketu is a shadow planet that has no head possession by Graha/other evil spirits
is common. The person can also be cheating or get cheated, and be filled with false
hopes or abnormal nonsensical spiritual philosophies. Self destructive
activities are also possible.
There
are multiple views about what exact combinations cause bandhana. We will take
the simplest view as causing a more moderate form of bandhana, and the more
specific rules needing multiple combinations to be more severe bandhana. Jaimini’s
views are based on Argala. Brihat Jataka gives the rule that if Malefic planets
are in the 2nd, 12th, or trines then Bandhana will be
indicated. Prasna Marga agrees with Brihat Jataka.
Jaimini, using the principle
of Argala, which is much more specific than Varahamihira:
píaiÔpu
ÉaGyyae¢RhsaMy< bNx> kae[yae,
raegjayyae> kIqyuGmyae> darir)yaeí.

paçcädripu: enemies from the backside, bhägya:

equal number of planets, bandhaù: bondage, koëayo: or trines, rogajäyayoù:
8th or 6th, kéöayugmayoù: 11th or 3rd,
därariphayoçca: 6th or 10th
Reckoned from lagna (or
Arudha Lagna), if equal number of planets are in any of the following pairs of
houses; 2nd and 12th,
5th and 9th, 8th and 6th, 3rd and 11th,
or 4th and 10th, then Bandhana yoga is caused.
Jaimini uses the principle of
Argala on houses. He does not differentiate malefic or benefic planets as the
cause of the bandhana. He says that if equal numbers of planets with equal
strength have intervention (argala) and obstruction (virodhargala) on the lagna
then it causes bandhana. There are equal forces pulling the native who becomes
stuck. Generally if it is caused by malefics the cause and result will be
malefic, ie. imprisonment, accident, hospitalization, etc. If the bandhana is
caused by benefics then the cause and result may be less malefic, ie. house
arrest or even being unable to leave a situation because of social obligations.
Jaimini then has uses aspects
to understand circumstances and nature of the bandhana.

If benefics aspect the
bandhana yoga the troubles are temporary while malefics aspecting indicate
punishment like beating with chains, etc.
He says that if this
combination is aspected by benefics it will be temporary as they will help you
out. It may also be a self imposed bandhana like a retreat. Jupiter causes self
imposed restrictions like Samadhi, Maunvrata (vow of silence), etc. Venus will indicate
that the native escapes or flees imprisonment. Moon shows the person may be
bound by social obligations. Mercury as natural sixth lord can show the cause
being legal problems or the legal injunctions that bind the person.
If aspected by malefics it
will not only be long bandhana, but the various planets aspecting will torture
the native according to their nature. Saturn will show physical seclusion,
elongated periods of pain and even beating. Mars will show the use of fire,
daggers, and beating. Rahu, represents those mid-evil torture methods, so he
can show the use mixtures, chemicals and other ingenious torture machines as
well a black magic. Ketu can show bandhana due to disincarnate beings, mental
imbalance, and also accidental detainment.
From the lagna the bondage
will be of the physical body. If the bandhana is from the Atmakaraka then the
soul suffers and spiritual growth is obstructed or stunted. The 7th
house can have bandhana which would be confinement and suffering of the spouse,
or 4th house bandhana which would be of the mother, and so on for
the significations of other houses. From
the Arudha lagna it will be of the person’s image and reputation. Arudhas will play a minor role in bandhana
yoga as it is something that happens to you more physically or mentally. In the
case of Mahatma Gandhi, his imprisonment led to more fame. The bandhana led to
his arudha rising.

Brihat

If evil planets occupy 12th, 5th,
2nd or 9th, the person will be imprisoned according to
the nature of that house. If lagna is in bhujaga (2nd and 3rd
of Cancer, 1st and 2nd of Scorpio and last of Pisces) or
nigada (1st of Capricorn) Drekkana, aspected by powerful malefics,
the person will be similarly confined. Anishtadhyaya
16
Nigada means shakles and
bhujaga means serpent, these are drekkanas. Prasna Marga has a similar
view to Brihat Jataka as Harihara has great respect for Varahamihira’s works.
The bandhana will function
during periods of the planets causing bandhana.
Mantra
Vir Bandha is caused by Mars and is removed by Sri Krsna who is
the Visnu avatar associated with the Moon. It is the Moon’s sign which
debilitates Mars. People with neecha Mars generally will be very peace loving
and don’t like fighting. They don’t enjoy being angry, and can’t withstand it. So
when Mars is causing bandhana, it is removed by taking refuge in the Moon in
the form of Krsna. The best mantra for
this purpose is the Gopal Mantra (or Bala-Gopala Mantra), though any Krsna
mantra is helpful. The Krsna-Beesi Yantra and Mantra are to be used.
Multiple Bandhana Yogas
Bandhana Upayas
Chayalis Patala (The 46
Chapters) by Shri Achyuta Dasa lists specific remedies for Bandhana yoga to
remove one from bondage. When there is the suffering caused these yogas it must
be broken. The person must move from tamas into sattva.
The mantras to remove
bandhanas relate to taking Sharanam in a form of Visnu. Of the three deities
Brahma is rajas guna, Siva is tamas guna, and Visnu is sattva guna. When a
person falls into a bandana time period Shiva mantras will naturally come to
the person and they will feel like only doing Shiva mantras. Shiva mantras
fight the tamas to destroy it. The normal person does not have the strength to
destroy or suppress tamas, so fighting (a tamasic energy) to remove tamas is not
the solution in this case. Taking the shelter of Visnu (sattva) is the best
method to come out of bondage. For this same reason, Ishta mantras relate to a
form of Visnu as they are to remove the bondage of this world.
There are three main benefics;
Jupiter, Sun and Moon, and Visnu deities associated with them are able to
remove the problems of bandhana yoga. This section gives mantras and yantras
associated with removing bandhana.

Ari Bandha is caused by Saturn and removed by Narayana, Jupiter
in all signs is God as he governs divinity in general. Jupiter as the element
of Akash removes the afflictions of Saturn. It is Akash that creates harmony
between all things, and Saturn which disrupts this. When Jupiter is pleased all
things work harmoniously together. In the Narayana Upanishad it is said that it
is Brihaspati who can stop Yama (Saturn). It is the aspect of Brihaspati in
Ayur Jyotish that shows death (Saturn) will not occur in a negative sign, and
also Jupiter’s aspect which shows a cure will come to an illness (Saturn). In
the Janakasadakshara mantra Jupiter is represented by Hari. Vaisnavites take
the name Hari to mean Visnu, Shaivites take the name to mean Shiva. Some
believe that When Hara (Shiva) goes into Samadhi on Visnu then he becomes Hari,
and there is no differentiation between Shiva and Visnu anymore. It is the
harmony of Jupiter that can remove the bandhana of Saturn.
The Vinsu-Beesi yantra is
used along with Narayana Mantra. Any mantra of Narayana will be helpful, and
one can be given according to the chart by a mantrika. For general use the
Ashtakshari Mantra is given below to be used with the Visnu-Beesi yantra.

Note: The numbers in the yantra show the order in which
the letters are written and offered sandalwood paste. The basic point is that
the movement should be from one square/triangle to another when they have a
common side or corner.

Naga and Ahi Bandha are caused by the nodes and are removed by Rama.
Rama is the Visnu incarnation associated with Visnu. It is the Sun that has the
power to remove poison. Tulsi Das says repeatedly that it is Rama who can
remove the curse of serpants. The Ramabhujanga Stotra of Tulsi Das speaks of
this. The Ramas Taraka Mantra is the best remedy for Bandhana caused by the
nodes. Though any Rama mantra or just chanting His name will remove the
bondage. The Rama-Beesi Yantra and Mantra are given below.
Multiple Bandhana Yogas
It is possible in some cases that a person may be afflicted by two or more of these bandhana yogas. It is said the remedy should get to the cause of the bondage.
Note: An individual's wife called the police saying she was being abused (he has a cursed Venus). The DA is prosecuting him for domestic violence even if the wife says she is ok and doesn’t want that to happen. First we took care of the curse then we took care of the naga badhaka then the naga bandha.
The Janaka Shadakshari Mantra
The
Janaka Shadakshari mantra has the three names of ‘Hari’ (Narayana), ‘Rama’, and
‘Krsna’. It activates Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon. It opens the left (lunar-Moon)
and right (solar-Sun) nadis in the body, as well as the central nadi (Shushumna)
and the third eye (Jupiter). This mantra helps with the removal of all kinds of
bandhana.

Atma Bandhana
When The Bandhana is
associated with the Atmakaraka then the native experiences Atma-bandhana. The
soul suffers and spiritual growth is obstructed or stunted and all the raja
yogas of the individual are nullified. Before anything can fructify the
individual must get atmamukti, the soul must be freed from its curses and
bondage or else it will follow the individual for lifetimes. This is different
from Jivanmukti where the life stream of the individual is freed from rebirth
(moksa). Atmamukti is needed to progress on the spiritual path, and break the
shackles that hold back the soul from true spiritual unfoldment.
Atma Samarprana with the correct
form of Visnu (mentioned above) is the key method to overcome this bandhana.
The Souls is holding back and must offer itself, its prana, to the deity. The
atman itself is offered. When full Sharanam (refuge) is taken in the deity then
atmamukti is given, the soul is removed from bandhana.
