Wedding Muhurta

Finding a Wedding Time (Vivāha Muhūrta):
(the rules I utilize)
1. I start by asking my clients to give me an approximate time they want to be married, such as April or May. There might not be a working day in those months, but then I can give them dates in June instead or sometime close to their first thoughts.
2. I ask them how strongly they want to be married at a specific time period. For example, sometimes they definitely want to be married in May, and the goal is to find the best day in May only. While the day in May might night be as good as the one that I could choose in June, I can make sure that the tithi and nakṣatra are good and avoid any terrible days. The best in a time period is better than possibly landing on a Dark Moon or something worse.
3. Some even give more specific dates, such as the last weekend of May or the first weekend of June. Here the goal is to just choose the day that is better, it is not about looking for best.
Which Day:
There I type in days: Thursday, Friday, Monday and Wednesday (written in order of best first) [never Tuesday]
Based on Kālaprakāśikā- Tithi: 2, 3, 5, 7, S10, S11
[S13, K1, 6, S8, S12, S15 are medium and only used if I can’t find a good day]
(never anything between K8 and K15)
Nakṣatra: Rohiṇī, Mṛgaśira, Maghā, U.Phalgunī, Hastā, Svātī, Anurādhā, Mūla, U.Ṣāḍhā, U.bādhra, Revatī
[From this remove those that are 8th from the Moon in both charts]
Which Time:
The above will give the possible days to consider, then on those days I start looking at planetary configurations. Some days may be good as per pañcāṅga but planetary alignments just don't work out to find a good chart. Avoid a cursed Moon (more than 2 malefics conjunct or aspecting), avoid Moon conjunction with Saturn or Rāhu. Avoid an unbroken Kālasarpa yoga.
Best rising signs are Gemini, Virgo and Libra [avoid Aries, Capricorn, Scorpio, Pisces unless there is a benefic in it]
Though planetary positions will outweigh the lagna indications alone: Kālaprakāśikā says that Aries indicates the bride to become a prostitute (husband dies and she sells herself to make money- so avoid if husband has a weak chart). Taurus brings financial hardship [avoid if there are money issues in the charts]. Gemini has good qualities. Cancer can be unfaithful [avoid if infidelity is indicated in the chart]. Leo indicates lack social life [avoid if natal Moon is weak]. Virgo shows the growth of prosperity. Libra indicates devotion. Scorpio gives grief [avoid if malefics afflict lagna, lagneśa, fourth house or sukheśa]. First part of Sagittarius gives an animal nature, second half is faithful. Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces are not good for fidelity [avoid if there is infidelity combinations in the natal chart].
Jupiter and Venus are best in the rising sign (lagna) and bring longevity to the marriage. Mercury brings fame to the couple. Saturn creates financial hardship, the nodes bring trouble having children, the Sun can indicate the husband dies early, the Moon indicates the wife may die early, while Mars will indicate health problems to both.
Keep the 8th house empty, anything there will be an indication for why the marriage breaks.
Keep the kāraka bhāva empty- these planets will be troubling in the relationship. Malefics are the worst here. Jupiter makes the spouse disrespectful, Mercury makes irreligious, Venus gives bad conduct of the husband, Mars indicates the wife’s adultery, Saturn indicates problems with children, Ketu gives mental health issues, Sun indicates widowhood, Rāhu indicates poverty and the Moon indicates unhappiness/suffering.
Prefer Mars in 3 or 11, second best in 6 or 10. There is some danger in all other places- if there is danger in a person’s chart from Mars ending the relationship, make sure Mars is in a safe place. Mars= anger, fighting, resentment, spite, and infidelity- he is a big issue in marriage.
In general, use standard rules for rāja yoga and argalā: benefics in Kendra and trines, malefics in upachaya. Avoid malefics in the fourth.
Some people will only accept standard times (10AM to 5 PM), others will be married early in the morning or late at night if the time is best. I work with my clients to make sure we have something that meets their needs.
Which Navāṁśa:
Once the rāśi has been determined then we look at the navāṁśa. We want a śubha rising sign, which means either a benefic in the rising sign (Jupiter, Venus, Moon best) or a sign ruled by a benefic planet (Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, etc). If the day is not śubha (like a Saturday or Sunday marriage) than make sure the navāṁśa lagna is very benefic to help compensate.
I avoid Moon, Venus or Jupiter to be nīcāṁśa (which would change the day) or maraṇa kāraka sthānāṁśa (which would change the time slightly). I prefer no maraṇa kāraka sthāna planets in navāṁśa if this can be achieved.
The exact muhūrta is for the "I do" moment and the "I now pronounce you man and wife". There are different traditions of Indian wedding ceremonies, and different regions will have different moments where they consider the couple officially husband and wife. There are always rituals done beforehand (which can last 3 days or more) and there are rituals done afterward, but it is the moment that the two people become husband and wife that is time dependant. In longer Indian ceremonies, they will often do various rituals, and when the specific moment comes, they will stop, do the "I do" moment and then keep doing other various wedding rituals.
Other rules:
Marriage the week Venus leaves combustion is bad for the bride. Marriage one week before Venus goes combust hurts the health of the groom. See drik pañcāṅga for easy calculations of Venus Combustion dates.
Marriage in the 8 days after the re-appearance of Jupiter hurts the groom. Marriage 15 days prior to Jupiter’s combustion hurts the bride. See drik pañcāṅga for easy calculations of Jupiter Combustion dates.
Notes:
Winter Solstice to Summer Solstice is considered more auspicious, Summer to Winter Solstice is secondary- but most people have a time of year they would prefer to be married and so this is not much used.
No, I do not use everything from the Shastra. If I did, then I would use the rule that it is best to marry a woman in her 5th, 6th or 7th year of age while Jupiter is well placed in a benefic sign of her horoscope.
In India, they don’t normally do weddings from July to October (Sun in Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra known as chaturmas). This relates to Indian Monsoon. I follow this for Indian weddings, and for Indian clients who want to be traditional, but I do not follow this for western clients who choose to get married at this time.Though I do avoid pitṛ pakṣa dates (the half month devoted to remembering ancestors/those who have passed away).
Indian astrologers don’t recommend weddings from December 15th till January 15th (Sun in Pisces) which was the month before the Winter Solstice in the tropical zodiac. I follow the tropical calculations for this no-marriage period, meaning no marriages from November 21st till December 21st, not the sidereal December 15th till January 15th
