Egyptian Astrology

Egyptian Astrology through the eyes of a Vedic Astrologer
The North Indian diagram with the Egyptian deities
as they relate to the signs of the zodiac.

In the Hellenized Egypt, the twelve sign zodiac was associated with the Egyptian pantheon [1]. The first sign (Aries) was associated with Osiris who was one of the main deities of the Egyptians. He is a lunar deity associated with renewal and therefore was associated with the sign renewing the year.

Hathor is a cow faced goddess connected to Venus and relates perfectly to Taurus. Gemini is ruled by Thoth who is seen as the same as the Greek Hermes, relating to the planet Mercury, but a very mystical side of Mercury seen in the Egyptian and Babylonian systems and not found in the India system of astrology.

The fourth sign is connected to Nebt-Het who nurtures the young. She is the sister of Isis and connected to the principle of unctuousness and sustenance. The fifth sign is connected to Horus, an incarnation of the Sun (Ra), and is placed fifth (house of children) from the father (Osiris).[2]

The sixth sign relates to Geb, the male personification of the Earth connected to creation and vegetation. He rules over Judges (the resolution of conflict) and guardianship.  The seventh sign is connected to Isis the partner of Osiris, they form the primary opposition of male-female partnership. Isis is an all-powerful goddess connected to birth and the fruition of all works.

The eighth sign is connected to Anubis the lord of the underworld. He is the lord of transmutation and the healing of badhaka related issues. The ninth sign is connected to Sekmat-Bast, the protector of soldiers and law enforcement. She is the patroness of physicians and is skilled in marana tantra. This is the fierce side of Sagittarius.

The tenth sign is ruled by Set who is the husband of Nebt-Het in the fourth (the secondary male-female opposition). Set is the evil brother of Osiris, who is jealous and usurps his brother during a lunar eclipse. In Egyptian mythology, Set plays a role similar to Ravana in the Ramayana.

The eleventh sign relates to Maat who is similar to the Vedic Rta. She is the natural law and therefore the source of truth and righteousness which guides things to harmony with the universe. The twelfth sign is ruled by Nut, the goddess of the night sky. She represents possibilities and is the source of new ideas. She is a goddess of astronomy. While the Osiris/Isis and Set/Nebt-Het are the couples ruling the primary directions, Nut (night sky) is the opposition to Geb (Earth) ruling the upwards and downwards directions.

[1] The best book available for Egyptian Astronomy/Astrology is Rosemary Clark's "The Sacred Tradition in Ancient Egypt" and "The Sacred Magic of Ancient Egypt". The correlation between sign and the deity is taken from her work.
[2] Ra is the source of Light. Horus is the solar principle and Osiris is the lunar principle.
